I am a mathematician by training who now works on machine learning for breast
cancer. Most of what I do sits between mathematics, medical imaging and
healthcare. I do my PhD at the Division of Systems and Control, supervised by
Jens Sjölund,
and I am part of the
WASP Graduate School
(ML/X track, 2026 cohort).
I hold a BSc in Mathematics from the
University of Barcelona, with a minor in
Statistics, and an MSc in Data Science (Machine Learning and Statistics) from
Uppsala University.
Before starting my PhD I spent a year as a research engineer at
KTH Royal Institute of Technology, in the
Division of Robotics, Perception and Learning. There I used diffusion-based
generative models to classify plankton images, as part of a marine
environmental research project.
In my free time I enjoy hiking, traveling and football. My name is Catalan and
is pronounced roughly a-LESH.
Research interests
machine learning for breast cancer detection,
medical imaging and 3D representations of the breast,
multimodal models that combine images with clinical and molecular data,
what the representations learned by generative models are good for.
